How 'about', the 5% quantity tolerance and partial drawings work under UCP 600 Article 30.

Short answer
Words like 'about' or 'approximately' before the amount, quantity or unit price allow a 10% tolerance either way (Art. 30(a)). If not stated in packing units or items, quantity may vary 5% more or less, provided the drawing does not exceed the credit amount (30(b)). Where quantity is fully shipped and unit price not reduced, a 5% lower drawing is allowed (30(c)).
| 'About' | ±10% |
|---|---|
| Bulk quantity | ±5% (30(b)) |
| Amount shortfall | Up to 5% less (30(c)) |
Check
- Whether 'about' applies to amount, quantity or price.
- Goods in units/items get no 5% tolerance.
- Never exceed the credit amount unless allowed.
